The Operators’ Award

This prestigious award is given once a year for outstanding work by camera operators in feature film production

The award acknowledges the craft, technical and artistic ability that a dedicated Camera Operator must have in order to achieve or surpass the aesthetic and technical demands of the Director and Director of Photography.

The Nominees simply have to impress the voting membership with their work on a particular production that has been theatrically exhibited within the year prior to the award being given.

Nomination criteria

The Nominees simply have to impress the voting membership with their work on a particular production that has been theatrically exhibited between:

1st September 2017 and 31st December 2018

In order to be eligible, the Nominee should have the credit as Camera Operator or “A” Camera Operator and be the sole or lead Camera Operator on the production.

Members eligible to propose and vote:

  • ACO- All Members

  • BSC – Full, Associate and Honorary*(Consisting of retired Directors of Photography and Camera Operators)

  • GBCT – All Members

(Eligible voters with multiple memberships can vote only once).

Please note: any new member elected after 1st October 2018 from any of the societies – ACO, BSC or GBCT – will not be able to participate in this year’s award.

Nominations and Voting Procedures

Selection titles for ‘long list’:

A ‘long list’ of 30 films (minimum), will be selected from a distributors’ (FDA) list of screen films in the UK during the qualifying period.

The Operators Award Administration Team in conjunction with the Awards Committee will detail the names of all the qualifying productions to be considered in this 30 films (minimum) list, that fulfill the criteria of nomination.

Voting:

A period of 18 days (1st to 18th January 2019) will be set for this first stage of voting.

Each eligible member will be allowed to nominate up to 5 productions, from the long list.

The 5 most popular Productions from this list will go into the final stage.

In the last week of January, a Jury from the Awards Committee and/or from the qualifying membership will be called to look at the nominations under the supervision of the Awards Committee Chairman Mike Southon BSC and decide on a winner.

The President of the BSC will announce the winner at this year ‘BSC Awards Night’.

(Voting procedures will be overseen by an independent organisation)
